In accordance with Law 1250 of the Greek Civil Code, the wedding has to take place within 6 months from the date the notice appeared in the press. However, it does not stipulate anywhere how many days prior to the wedding the announcement must be placed. Theoretically, the wedding could take place on the same day as the announcement, as it falls within the 6 months. If the 6 months have gone by, the announcement must be reprinted. However, the competent authorities often request that the wedding announcement be placed between 3 months and 15 days prior to the date of the wedding.
But why is there such a discrepancy between the dates?
Although we discussed the issue with our legal department, the 3-month to 15-day range is not based on a specific law. It may possibly be based on an internal regulation drawn up by individual municipalities and parishes where weddings are held.
To avoid any hassles or delays, it is best to follow the instructions given to you by the competent municipal employee or priest.
